Tara Swennen talks styling Kristen for Cannes 2026 with Vogue Magazine

Since attending her first Cannes Film Festival back in 2012, actor and director Kristen Stewart has become one of the event’s main red carpet fixtures. There is a heightened sense of glamour and extravagance that comes with attending the event, and over the years, she and stylist Tara Swennen have leaned into the challenge by delivering many, many memorable looks—from silvery Chanel couture (the year she famously removed her Louboutins!), to pink tweed skirt suits. “I love Cannes because it’s a world stage—it draws more attention than a lot of other festivals or red carpets,” Swennen tells Vogue. “Besides the Oscars—where I do think there’s a little bit of restraint—Cannes really nurtures a mixture of glamour, art, and beauty. People really take the opportunity to go big.”

This year, then, Stewart and Swennen were ready to deliver yet another winning Cannes wardrobe, one to match Stewart’s buzzy new project. In town to promote the Quentin Dupieux film Full Phil, in which she stars alongside Woody Harrelson and Emma Mackey, Stewart brought two striking, high-spirited outfits to the Cannes carpet this weekend.

And as an enduring face for Chanel, it’s no surprise that they were both courtesy of the French label. “There is a beautiful relationship between Kristen, Chanel, and Matthieu Blazy, because she activates his pieces in a different way,” says Swennen. “He’s really loosened Chanel up. When you look at his clothes, the tweeds are a little lighter, the tailoring is slouchier, and the silhouettes feel a little less rigid and lived-in. That is very much the arena that Kristen likes to live in.”

For the film’s photo call this weekend, Stewart first venture onto the Cannes Croisette saw her sporting a sheer gray “tweed” top and skirt from Chanel’s spring 2026 couture collection. “It was a lightweight take on a classic tweed. It had these frayed edges and jeweled buttons—we loved the delicacy of it, and the tension of the sheerness,” says Swennen. Though the look appeared totally-transparent, turns out, it was all an optical illusion. “It actually had these little boy shorts underneath, and a tiny, delicate camisole, so it looked more revealing than it was,” says Swennen.

Later in the evening, Stewart slipped into a more evening-ready option—a red and black knit Chanel gown from Blazy’s fall 2026 collection. “I loved the color. We just threw it on, it fit perfectly,” says Swennen. “It had these delicate crochet leaves. It felt very Chanel—but very modern and cool.”

Stewart also opted to forgo her signature makeup look. “I love that she went a little bit different in her glam as well,” Swennen says. “You don’t normally see a red lip on her, and it worked really well with her new pixie cut.” They finished off the graphic ensemble with Chanel’s High Jewelry pieces, including an itty-bitty red timepiece.

Punctuating both her daytime and nighttime looks? A signature Stewart touch: comfy sneakers by both Nike and Converse, directly plucked from the star’s own wardrobe. “We wanted to have a youthful and effortless vibe, but also have it be grounded in real movement, rather than polished perfection,” says Swennen. “It had a sophistication, but also was a bit rebellious.”

Such a footwear choice was an intriguing one, given Cannes still holds a strict dress code that discourages flat shoes, as well as sheer and voluminous designs. For Swennen, the (somewhat archaic) Cannes dressing rules are something to consider—but both she and Stewart clearly love pushing the envelope. “If it’s not trashy and people remain polished, I think [the rules are] malleable,” says Swennen. “Now, there are plenty of people circumventing the dress code—whether it be heels or transparency. It’s nice that there’s a loosening up of it. People should feel free to go and enjoy themselves and promote their art—and be authentic to themselves.”

Having worked with Stewart since she was 14, Swennen says such an attitude is precisely why the duo continue love working together. They both see red carpet dressing as an opportunity for self-expression and individuality. “It’s the ultimate collaboration, because she’s never afraid to try new things, which is great because I love a good challenge,” says Swennen. “For me, it really is always about embodying your authentic self wherever you go. She looks her best when the clothes feel instinctive to her. She never wants to feel over-rehearsed. The one thing I’ve learned about this woman is she is always going to be effortlessly cool.”

While the star’s whirlwind Cannes trip is already coming to a close (she’s back to filming her next project), Swennen says you will be seeing Stewart on a red carpet again very soon—this is not the end of their stellar France run, by any means. In late June, Stewart will be acting as the president for the Biarritz Nouvelles Vagues Festival in France. “We had virtual fittings for that while she was in Cannes,” says Swennen, hinting that “French Cruise” will be the sartorial vibe. This summer, Stewart will also be promoting her wife Dylan Meyer’s new film, The Wrong Girls, and she’s also working on a new TV show. The Stewart-Swennen partnership stays serving, all summer long.

It has been 17 years since Swennen started working with Kristen Stewart and went on to dress her for her first major red carpet collaboration during the 2007 Toronto Film Festival. “She is family,” says Swennen, who had an exceptionally busy year with the Spencer star’s jam-packed awards season calendar. “It was particularly fun because we had so many opportunities to play. Kristen is an ever-changing fashion chameleon, and we love to push boundaries.” The L.A.-based stylist, who also dresses Matthew McConaughey, estimates that they put together 50 looks for Stewart’s press tour, including casual outfits for Zooms and countless Chanel samples for the longtime face of the brand. Says Stewart: “We both love the ease that our history gives our work.” Most memorable? The Oscar nominee eschewed a traditional ball gown in favor of Chanel short-shorts, rewriting the rules of appropriate attire for Hollywood’s biggest night. “I had a very specific way I wanted to feel that night,” says Stewart. Adds Swennen: “It made waves simply because it was original and unprecedented; I’m glad it was well received.” The stylist kicked off Stewart’s press at the Venice Film Festival with a similarly short tweed Chanel romper. “Kristen’s red carpet style is uniquely hers. She is always unapologetically authentic and carries a confidence that is magnetizing.”

“It is a fun and collaborative process that develops and unfolds as we grow together,” says Swennen. Adds Stewart: “We started working together when I was 14! She has a wealth of experience that informs her eye and her taste. Tara’s loyal and she enjoys helping people feel their best.”

Tara Swennen talks about Kristen with W Magazine

Celebrity stylist Tara Swennen has worked with everyone from Gwen Stefani to Emily Ratakojwski, but has perhaps gotten the most attention for her collaboration with rule-breaking actress Kristen Stewart, who most recently was the reigning dare-devil of the Cannes red carpet. And that's exactly what Swennen loves about her. "One of my greatest goals as a stylist is to create a balance of what my clients would like to wear, what styles are trending, and how I envision their fashion evolution," she explains. Here, the stylist opens up about how she introduced Stewart to Chanel, what she thinks of the actress's new buzz cut, and why sustainability is more important now than ever.

How did you get started in the business?
I studied fashion design at Cornell University. Once I graduated, I moved to New York and worked in the studio services at Barneys NY, where I met my first stylist, Andrea Lieberman. I  started my styling career with her... and then rest is history. I moved to Los Angeles right after 9/11, and began working for Rachel Zoe. It was great as it was the during the Lindsey Lohan, Mischa Barton red-carpet era. After about five years I branched out on my own, and that’s when I began working with Kristen Stewart.

How did you first meet?
Her publicist of 15 years, Ruth Bernstein, put us together when she was only 14 years old for Into The Wild. We have remained tried and true ever since. Kristen was one of my first clients I got within the first year I started styling. It's funny because the first look I dressed her in happened to be Chanel.

Kristen Stewart has great personal style. How do you take that into consideration with your work?
One of my greatest goals as a stylist is to create a balance of what my clients would like to wear, what styles are trending, and how I envision their fashion evolution. It is paramount to me to showcase their personalities, so the end goal is to refine and elevate whatever their own tastes may be. Kristen's fashion sense has evolved as she has grown into an ever-expanding repertoire, so it makes it that much more fun for me!

How does a new beauty look, for example Kristen’s buzz cut, influences the styling of their look?
A new beauty look can have an enormous effect on the styling. I welcome this new bleached buzz cut on Kristen. It suits her perfectly and allows us to go in a new direction. I feel my part in it is to facilitate their evolution as its coming.

The Cannes Film Festival is known for having super strict dress codes. How have you been able to work with the rules and maintain a look that feels appropriate?
Kristen simply happens to not really be a gown person, so we have adapted her unique style to the event by keeping her dressy yet with her own unique twist on it.

What is your day-to-day like as a stylist?
There is no set day to day in this business, which is one of the reasons I love it! Some days I am researching online, others I am pulling and fitting, and others I am on set... it's ever changing, but yes, I am always planning.

What are some of your goals?
I would really like to become more of a spokesperson for ethical fashion. I became a vegan last year and feel that we need to be more conscious. Fashion is not a necessity. If you want a fur stole, you can achieve that look just in a more responsible way.

How does this more conscious way of styling work when you're dealing with a client?
Lately, I will just reach out to vegan brands I see on Instagram or hear about and will ask them to send me things to dress my clients in. Most of my clients share the same thinking, which is great. For example, Kristen won’t wear fur or wear snakeskin, but sometimes will wear leather – so we can be more responsible and shape the look. We are in an age where we need to become more responsible on all fronts and as a passionate fashionista- I think it's part of my job to help from within now.

What else are you working on now?
Tons of things! Kristen is launching a new project with Chanel, so tons of stuff for that. I also just picked up a few new clients like Ashley Benson and Bella Thorne!

Who is your dream client?
My girls are my dream clients. I am a very lucky woman.

Style icons:
The Hepburns - Katharine and Audrey.

Okay, let’s get personal. What are three words to describe your own style?
Classic, elegant, and fun.

Favorite vintage stores in the world?
I love flea markets worldwide. That's where you can find the best and most unique treasures!

Style pet peeve:
Bad tailoring and not leaving anything to the imagination.

Best recent discovery:
PreHeels.

Last purchase:
A pet pig named Sprinkles ;)

Any other plans down the line?
I would love to get back into men’s styling!

Tara Swennen talks about Kristen

You’ve put Kristen Stewart in sneakers on the red carpet. Was this her idea or yours? And how did you feel about the look as a whole?

Originally, the appearance of Kristen’s sneakers on carpets came from a place of necessity. She was constantly getting hurt on set, as she loves to do her own stunts, but she truly is an everyday T-shirt-and-jeans girl like myself. So we embraced it and it became part of her look.

Tara Swennen talks about Kristen at the Met Gala

StyleCaster: The Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night. How is prepping for the red carpet different than others?

Tara Swennen: For both Kristen Stewart and Teresa Palmer, we started about a month out by figuring out who they were going with. We loved the idea of Stella McCartney for Kristen because she hasn’t gone with a girl before, so we were having our girl power moment. Teresa went with Diane von Furstenberg which was an organic fit as well. I never thought both of my girls would end up in red lace for a punk themed gala!

With Kristen, we went over the sketches via email—and it was unanimous decision that we really liked the jumpsuit. Stella had given us the option of doing it in black or green and the cranberry red color that we ended up going with. Kristen went back and forth between the red and the green—and we just decided we loved it. Her hair is a little bit reddish right now, so we thought it would complement it well.

With Teresa it was the same situation—she has a crazy travel schedule right now. We loved the idea of a red on a blonde. The color looks so pretty on her. We loved the deep V in the front. I’m a huge fan of lace, I love putting it on my girls. With Kristen we did our fitting via Skype with Stella. So it was really fun to do that—and they’re good friends and have met before in London, so that was really nice. That was just to make sure every nip and tuck was done properly. She had a representative from L.A. and a tailor we both used.

How did the theme and celebration of the “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit impact your styling?

The main thing for me is that the girls feel comfortable and in their element. With Kristen, the theme was perfect for her, that’s why we thought the pant was kind of cool and different from a gown. The pantsuit was definitely her interpretation of punk. I knew a lot of would be hair and makeup, since Kristen doesn’t accessorize that much, so it had to be in the outfit as well as the beauty. Kristen doesn’t have her ears pierced or anything so I tried to add a studded heel for a little bit of a punk edge.

Given her love of Converse, a lot of people expected her to wear them last night given the theme. Did you guys discuss doing that?

No! You would’ve thought it would have happened. That’s why I love her! Every time you think she’s going to do something, she switches it up. It was more than punk glam.

How have you seen Kristen’s style evolve—on and off the red carpet?

Off the red carpet, that girl is tried and true when it comes to her look. She loves being in T-shirts and jeans and Converse and she’s been doing that since she was 14. I’m so happy she goes for it on the red carpet, but her true style on a day-to-day basis has stayed exactly the same and I love that about her. She doesn’t feel the need to follow trends.

As far as on the red carpet, I started with her when she was 14, she’s become a woman since I’ve known her and really come into her own. She’s more and more courageous and takes risks every year. I was blown away at the last “Breaking Dawn” press tour when she let me do all this sheer stuff and was okay wearing very risky pieces. I think she’s really coming into her own with her fashion. I love her because she’s so tried and true—she knows what she likes. There are certain things she will not do—I respect that she has things she knows about herself and she knows to stick what works.

What won’t Kristen wear?

Last season, it was so funny because they called us out in The New York Times [that] Kristen had sort of hit every trend last year except for peplum! She’s not a fan of peplum. I tried with 20 peplum dresses this year, and it was not happening! I’m trying to get her to the high-neck turtleneck thing. I’m trying to push her.

How do you and Kristen feel about last night’s Met Gala look compared to past years?

I think out of the four times she’s gone, this has been my favorite look—but that’s not to say the others weren’t far behind. The Balenciaga last year had a punk element too—she loved that one as well. I love the dress the Proenza Schouler boys made for her in 2011. I think it was just really fun this year with her collaborating with a girl because it’s been boys the whole time. She was very involved, which was great, so I think she really enjoyed that. She loved the idea of slipping her hand in her pocket! She could be part of the design process.

Did you see any other standout looks on the red carpet?

Sarah Jessica Parker was my favorite! I thought she nailed it—I’m a stylist who loves when people take a concept and make it their own. She by far was the best! There were definitely some great ones, but she was the one that bowled me over. I actually loved Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney as well—it was a really unique dress.

With summer coming up, what are some staples every girl needs to have in her closet?

I’m on the neon tip still and I love it with cool metallics, like a fun neon skirt. Clearly, I’m really into the jumpers—you can run around in a cute little romper and a cute little jumpsuit all summer!

A lot of stylists are breaking into design. Is this something you’re interested in?

I went to school for design and when we did The Hollywood Reporter luncheon for most powerful stylists I was looking around the table and was like, “I’m the only person who doesn’t have their own TV show and fashion line!” I feel like I have to jump on board. I majored in design at Cornell. It’s a natural evolution these days—I look forward to it when I figure out what exactly I want to do!

Create Kristen's LAFF hairstyle at home (GlamourUK)

Kristen Stewart's fully-loaded hairstyle is our look of the week.

Our celebrity hair expert Mark Woolley, Founder of Electric Hairdressing London, is here to help you get the look at home. Mark told us:"This is a great example of loosely styled hair at its best. I love that Kristen's hair has been carefully blow dried to opposite effect to look naturally casual yet distinctly sexy."

Follow Mark's steps to success:

STEP ONE
To encourage volume, apply some Shu Uemura Ample Angora Volumising Foam (£16.50) to damp hair and comb through to ensure the lengths are coated evenly. This will leave your hair looking thick and full-bodied but without the 'crunchy' effect.

STEP TWO
You want your hair to cascade naturally so ignore partings and just brush the hair back and away from the face. Take large sections of hair (about 2 inches wide) and blow dry with a Denman Head Hugger Brush (£8.35). The concave shape of the barrel allows you to get really close to the roots so lift the hair up and away from the head as you blow dry to create maximum root lift. Hold the hair taut through two-thirds of the length to ensure a sleek and smooth result but as you reach the last third, wind the hair around the brush for a few seconds before letting go to create a soft wave - this adds shape and movement to the finished look.

STEP THREE
Work your way through the hair and allow it to cool - it is through the heating up then cooling down of the hair which helps it keep shape, so try not to touch the sections of hair which you have already styled. If you want to speed this up, use the cool setting on your hair dryer and hover the air flow over your hair at a distance so as to not disturb the curls too much.

STEP FOUR
For hair to fall naturally around the face, give it a bit of a shake - this also highlights the layers in the hair. Then, rub some Electric Serum (£17) between your hands until it forms a very fine film before smoothing the lengths down very gently to eliminate flyways. Form a cupping shape with your hands, pushing hair up near the head to boost volume and twist the ends of the hair to encourage separation and enhance the waves. The non-oily formula leaves the hair light with a smooth, glossy shine.

Kristen Stewart on 25 Best Dressed Lists for the MTV Movie Awards 2011

Kristen looked incredibly beautiful in a Balmain dress at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday 5 June 2011.

Since that event she has gained so much praise, as expected, from several media outlets, magazines, fashion blogs and fashion critics that we have put them all together in this post.

Click on each link for more details:

Best Dressed at the MTV Movie Awards

I am such a Kristen Stewart fan girl… it’s a little embarrassing. And NO, not because of Twilight. I’ve loved her ever since she acted in Speak, a movie after my favorite childhood book, thank you very much. (Although… I did see the trailer for the next Twilight movie this morning and I’m kinda maybe sorta totally gonna have a front seat on opening night.)

That being said, when I heard Kristen would be at this year’s MTV Movie Awards, she was the only one I cyber stalked so I could see what she was wearing and what she did to her hair and makeup. And of course I’m biased when I say she killed it! She looked stunning as ever and she’s my best dressed this year, hands down. I want it all: that dress, that hair, those shoes… oh and that hot British boyfriend.

MTV Movie Awards' Best-Dressed Stars

The Twilight star wowed in a short red Balmain mini adorned with safety-pins, studs, and rhinestones.

Certified Fresh:

Kristen Stewart always rocks the Mtv Awards red carpet. Her safety zone is always something short, something scarlet and something severe. This year, she did not stray from her signature style with a mini Balmain sheath that was safety pin and sequin studded, making Kristen rival that hot chick from the ZZ Top video. Yeah, she's got legs.

Check out some of my favorite looks of the night:

Kristen Stewart showed some leg in a red hot Balmain mini.

5. Dots Blog

Kristen Stewart may have been the shining star of the night bringing in the most awards for Twilight, but we were more excited about her red carpet look that didn’t include sneakers! She looked great in this rocker chic red mini dress with studs and safety pins that matched perfectly with her I-don’t-care hair.

6. Elle UK

There was a time when safety pins were mentioned, you automatically think Elizabeth Hurley. Now who can’t forget Hurley’s Versace gown held together by large safety pins? That daring dress, which she wore to the 1994 premiere of “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” has been voted the greatest red carpet gown of all time by a Debenhams poll in 2008.

Then Kristen Stewart arrives at the MTV Movie Awards in a Balmain safety pins, studs, grommets, and stars embellished dress and our jaws dropped. Well, Balmain’s Spring 2011 RTW collection, which showcased that look, is something that we have always loved the moment we laid our eyes on it. So when Kristen walked that red carpet, we already knew she would walk away not only with MTV Movie Awards trophies but the best dressed as well. Liz  has the 90′s and Stewart can have this decade.

10 Best Dressed of the Week

Kristen Stewart revealed her picture perfect pins in a strapless Balmain beaded minidress.

10. EW

Between her auburn hair and rocker-chic Balmain mini, it looked like the camera-shy actress finally hit her stride. A-

Well, if you are a starlet in Hollywood who wants to wear a sparkly micro-mini, you will have to get to it through Kristen Stewart. She is a junkie for them. Finding this Balmain must have been like accidentally stealing someone’s pants and then — oops — discovering a bump of coke in them. Although that would obviously never happen in real life. The close-up of this dress is even cooler — kind of like Elizabeth Hurley’s iconic safety-pin gown, but without the cleavage, nor the desperation. She’s like a giant pincushion. Come see.

Best: Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart is red-hot on the red carpet! The Twilight star (who won best female performance and best movie) shows her sexy side in a strapless, beaded Balmain mini and pointy-toed black pumps. But comfort won out in the end, as the actress ditched her stilettos for flat sneakers by the time she accepted the award for best kiss with her Eclipse costar (and real-life boyfriend!) Robert Pattinson.

14. Cosmopolitan - UK

The Twilight star went for super-sexy in a red embellished mini dress which stood out from the crowd.

Never in a million years I would have said that Kristen Stewart would be the best dressed at an event. Last night, for the he MTV Movie Awards, she wore a stunningly rock'n'roll red Balmain mini dress detailed with studs and safety pins. As I have said before, she looks her best in super short numbers, which she pulls off easily, and effortless hair and makeup.

Looking closely at her styling you might think Bárbara Martelo styled her. She's known for wearing only Balmain and Isabel Marant. The key of her style lies in the fact that she wears this ostentatious statement pieces with her natural hair down and virtually no makeup. It was actually Martelo who wore the jacket version of Kristen's dress during Paris Fashion Week back in February. She was also spotted then in the black "Chiara" Christian Louboutin pumps that Kristen paired up with the dress for the red carpet.

This is probably just a big coincidence but what an incredibly great match would Martelo be as Stewart's stylist? I'd love it!

16. And Pop

Here’s some of my favourites. We have Kristen Stewart in Balmain...

Winner: Kristen Stewart

If you're ever going to wear a safety pin dress (so Vivienne Westwood!), you might as well wear it to an MTV event. This is fun, edgy, and for once KStew's notoriously glum demeanor just comes across as rock 'n' roll swagger. Love it.

18. ITN- UK

Twilight's Kristen Stewart, who won three awards, opted for a rock-chick look with safety pins and studs encrusted on her short red dress.

Kristen Stewart is one starlet who has a very distinctive style; put this tomboy in something she doesn't like and we know about it. Which is why this rocker-inspired number by Balmain - yes, BALMAIN! - is the perfect choice for our K-Stew. It has enough safety pins and studs to make Joan Jett proud and as ever, she teams it with buckets loads of attitude. Here's hoping this is the first step to some Balmainia for Kristen. As for her hair, it's not too preened, it's not too greasy, just totally effortless in a bed-head stylee. Foxy!

20. Styleite

Best: Kristen Stewart embraces her edge in this prickly Balmain.

Her movie scored big, and so did Kristen Stewart on the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards.

No. 1: Kristen Stewart's Balmain mini and tousled hair

Kristen Stewart has that slouchy, rocker look down pat. This sexy mini-dress with safety pin accents is totally her style, and coupled with her tousled hairstyle and smoky eye makeup, she has finally learned how to be herself on the red carpet. The Twilight star's previous red carpet experiences were riddled with styles you could tell she felt awkward in because they didn't reflect her personality.

On the other end of the spectrum, Stewart’s take on the trend is edgy and definitely a little rock 'n' roll. She showed up to the recent MTV Movie Awards with a deep side part and tons of body in her hair. “I loved her look at the MTV Movie Awards,” says Cunha. “She really got the whole thing right.”

We're so proud of Kristen. :)

Kristen featured on MSN Hit Beauty of 2010

HIT: Red Hot Hair

KStew has never looked better. The reddish
hue she chose for her hair, along with that gorgeous front braid, really softens
her look. But she stays true to her edgier side with a smoky eye.
