Adir Abergel and Jillian Dempsey talk about creating Kristen's look for the Met Gala

Kristen Stewart’s look for the Met Gala 2019 was inspired by David Bowie and a bottle of nail polish.

“She immediately referenced The Man Who Fell to Earth as her inspiration,” said hairstylist Adir Abergel, creative director of Virtue Labs. “I said ‘100 percent.’”

When you look at stills of Bowie in the film, his hair is, undoubtedly red, but specifically ginger red. Stewart’s last night, on the other hand, was blazing neon red, and that’s where the nail polish came in.

“We wanted to pay homage to Karl Lagerfeld, which is where the color idea came from,” explains Abergel. “But I also wanted to add a ’90s heartthrob side to it, so we did a center part and made the hair a little floppy.”

The red in question is Chanel’s Arancio Vibrante, a bright poppy orange that, yep, popped on the ends of Stewart’s hair. L.A. colorist Daniel Moon bleached only her top layers, then painted the red on the ends, the color gradually rising closer to the roots the further back of her head it traveled.

“We matched the reds over FaceTime,” laughed Abergel. “It took Daniel only two tries, which is pretty amazing.”

Abergel hand-raked Virtue’s Un-Frizz Cream through Stewart’s ends for separation, while manicurist Ashley Johnson used the actual polish shade on her nails. Makeup artist Jillian Dempsey bleached Stewart’s brows, which was a first for the actress.

“I was so excited to de-virginize them,” enthused Dempsey. “I originally wanted to pop them out to a white color, but I removed the bleach prematurely and it was this cool banana color. Instead of toning it down, I just left them raw and punk.”

Dempsey amped the brows even further with an underline of white pencil, then dotted her eyelids with Tile Red and Bronze Taupe shades from CHANEL Les 4 Ombres in Blurry Mauve, finishing with a coat of Inimitable Mascara in Noir. The lips stayed nude with Chanel’s Rouge Coco Flash in Chicness.

“That was one of our push-the-look moments,” explains Dempsey. “I held a fuchsia in front of her mouth just to see it, then a red, and we were like, ‘Oh hell, no. It’s got to be a nude.’”

A red lip would have been too much, even for camp — a term that first appeared in Moliere’s 1671 play The Importance of Scapin, right around the time one character instructs another to “Wear a furious look. Strut about like a drama king.” Stewart’s look might not have been furious, but it certain had drama.

“Kristen is a modern-day Bowie to me,” says Abergel, “She’s always played with gender in such a beautiful way, like Bowie did. And she’s just as fearless.”

Actress Sophie Turner mentions Kristen with Vogue magazine

If you could dye your hair any color, what would it be?

Oh, I don’t know! I think it’d be fun to go black, a bit dark for a while, though I don’t know if it would suit me. That or, actually, I was thinking of going platinum, like almost gray. I don’t think I could pull off a buzz cut, though for a role I would. . . . I love Kristen Stewart’s buzz cut. She’s my girl crush, my hair crush, my everything crush!

Hairstylist Bridget Brager talks about Kristen's buzz cut with Fashion Week Daily

Kristen’s buzz cut was a huge moment, and more women have buzzed their hair since, like Katy Perry. What was that conversation like?

Kristen had wanted to shave her head for the longest time. She’s never been able to do it because of work. There was an opportunity with her newest movie to decide who her character was. We were working together one morning and she mentioned that she wanted to shave her head, and I said, OK, we can totally do it. She flipped. She was like, We can do this today? I got in contact with Chanel, and we got the OK. We had an hour and a half before the premiere of her film, Personal Shopper. We dyed her hair platinum blonde and shaved her head. It was pretty intense. I was so nervous because they decide very last minute to do these kinds of things and you never know what kind of ride it’s going to be.

Hairstylist Ken O'Rourke talks about cutting Kristen's hair

kenorourke1 My new haircut for #kristenstewart #firehair really was a wash and go #noproduct #cutitinthebathroom #chanel #couture #paris #somuchfun and she rocks it.

kenorourke1 Job done #Paris #couture 10.30am hotel bathroom show starts at 12.00 make up has to be done @emmakotch #makeup #hair

Elle US Luckily O'Rourke was able to take some time out of his whirlwind Paris schedule to tell us a little about the look. "Yes it's true, I cut her hair two hours before the show in her hotel bathroom," he said when I questioned his hashtag. "We had fun doing it, and at the end the bathroom floor was covered in red hair." After, he let Stewart's hair air dry as she had her makeup done and got dressed. He then ran a dab of wax though her tresses and sprayed them with a quick spritz of dry shampoo. And that was it: a no-fuss style, for a no-fuss kind of girl.

Since it has such minimal upkeep, O'Rourke thinks this look, which he calls a cross between a 1970's coupe savage and River Pheonix, is perfect for the girl with a hectic schedule. "It has versatility and can transform from wash-and-run to nighttime chic—it's not a personality stealer, it's a confidence giver." As for the color, O'Rourke went for a haircut that works in harmony with her fiery hue and makes it look even more interesting.

Elle UK Mini Interview

Last year ELLE interviewed Kristen Stewart, and being a beauty interview the discussion naturally turned to hair. Back then she told us that her next experimental hairstyle would be cornrows, the exact hairstyle she debuted at the Sundance film festival this weekend,

You see Stewart isn’t afraid of experimenting with her hair for the sake of her art, "I’m pretty much open to anything – if I really loved the part I’d do anything. You know, hair grows, relatively speaking it doesn’t take that long in exchange for a good experience so I think it’s worth it,”' she told ELLE UK. "I’ve been blonde, dark, I’ve had reddish hair, short, long. I run the gamut, you know."

Despite her dedication to the cause, in her own time she prefers low-commitment styles that aren’t so try-hard.

"Last year everyone started shaving the side of their head. I’m shooting for a couple of days in New York but then at the end of November I’m done for the year. I’m going to get a couple of tight cornrows put in. It almost gives the impression of no hair so I’m stoked about that,"said the star. "I think a shaved head is a little forced, but the cornrows gives you the effect without the commitment."

Hair Styles 2011: The Hottest Hair Makeovers of the Year!

Kristen Stewart

The actress debuted to-the-elbow long dark chestnut brown hair when she sat front row the Mulberry fashion show in London in mid-September. Why the transformation? It’s for a role—she’s filming Snow White and the Huntsman, playing Snow White. The movie is slated to hit theaters in 2012.

Create Kristen's LAFF hairstyle at home (GlamourUK)

Kristen Stewart's fully-loaded hairstyle is our look of the week.

Our celebrity hair expert Mark Woolley, Founder of Electric Hairdressing London, is here to help you get the look at home. Mark told us:"This is a great example of loosely styled hair at its best. I love that Kristen's hair has been carefully blow dried to opposite effect to look naturally casual yet distinctly sexy."

Follow Mark's steps to success:

STEP ONE
To encourage volume, apply some Shu Uemura Ample Angora Volumising Foam (£16.50) to damp hair and comb through to ensure the lengths are coated evenly. This will leave your hair looking thick and full-bodied but without the 'crunchy' effect.

STEP TWO
You want your hair to cascade naturally so ignore partings and just brush the hair back and away from the face. Take large sections of hair (about 2 inches wide) and blow dry with a Denman Head Hugger Brush (£8.35). The concave shape of the barrel allows you to get really close to the roots so lift the hair up and away from the head as you blow dry to create maximum root lift. Hold the hair taut through two-thirds of the length to ensure a sleek and smooth result but as you reach the last third, wind the hair around the brush for a few seconds before letting go to create a soft wave - this adds shape and movement to the finished look.

STEP THREE
Work your way through the hair and allow it to cool - it is through the heating up then cooling down of the hair which helps it keep shape, so try not to touch the sections of hair which you have already styled. If you want to speed this up, use the cool setting on your hair dryer and hover the air flow over your hair at a distance so as to not disturb the curls too much.

STEP FOUR
For hair to fall naturally around the face, give it a bit of a shake - this also highlights the layers in the hair. Then, rub some Electric Serum (£17) between your hands until it forms a very fine film before smoothing the lengths down very gently to eliminate flyways. Form a cupping shape with your hands, pushing hair up near the head to boost volume and twist the ends of the hair to encourage separation and enhance the waves. The non-oily formula leaves the hair light with a smooth, glossy shine.
