Kristen talks about the Noir et Blanc de Chanel Fall-Winter Makeup Collection with Bustle




Sparkly highlighters, glittering eyeshadows, and ultra-reflective lip glosses — while all shine brightly in the light, not all are created equal. One product can make you look dewy while another can transform your cheekbones into a display of fireworks appropriate for the Fourth of July. So figuring out how to achieve that in-between — just the right amount of glimmer for day to day — can sometimes be tricky. Somehow, Chanel Beauty managed to find that delicate balance of shimmer and shine in its Fall-Winter 2019 collection.

The line — named Noir Et Blanc — was inspired by black and white, the symbolic (non) colors of Gabrielle Chanel’s life, as well as the in-between shades found throughout Paris. During a presentation for the collection in the same city, Chanel Beauty’s Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer Lucia Pica (who developed the line) shares that she found inspiration in the chilly light of the Tuileries Garden, the gleaming water of the Seine, and the cool white marble of the statues found throughout Paris. Pica also wanted to play with the “feeling of light and shadow” that she noticed while exploring the city, as well as the textures so that the products would have both austerity and softness. The result? A literally brilliant collection whose shine is bold, but natural, and will have you twinkling in a chic, Chanel way.

There are 16 different products in the Noir Et Blanc De Chanel collection and each possess the elements of "transparency and intensity" and the presence of black, white, and the colors in-between, which Pica wanted to capture. While this may sound extremely difficult to do — the act of harnessing opposites — you can really see it once you start to play with the makeup. You'll notice it immediately in the The Noir Supreme eyeshadow palette, a favorite of Pica's, which features four cream-to-velvet shades that can be found between the black and white spectrum — shimmering gray, beige, and bronze hues. You'll see it in the Carte Blanche Ombre Premiere Top Coat, which looks like a typical white glittery shadow at first, but once applied, boasts an almost wet, glimmering ocean effect that can be subtle while still making a statement.

But among the 16 are two stand-out products that you will absolutely need in your beauty arsenal this fall. First, the Laque Noire Rouge Coco Gloss, a gorgeous black lipgloss with hints of cherry that has won Kristen Stewart's heart. During the launch party for the Noir Et Blanc collection, the Chanel brand ambassador tells me that she is obsessed with the product and how versatile it can be. "I love the black lipgloss. You can put it on really thick and it can be very intense, [or you can] put a little on — it’s like 1 to 100 and everything in-between is up to you," Stewart explains.

This was no easy feat to accomplish, Pica tells me of her creation. "It was hard to find that balance between the cherry, the red, and the black, and not make it gray," she shares. "I didn’t want it to go gray or go too black or be too thick — I wanted it to stay chic." Like Stewart describes, the gloss can either create a sheer, deep red shine or an intense black glaze on your lips, but neither will leave your pout looking gaudy or feeling tacky. Thanks to Pica, the sheen is just right.

My personal favorite product of the entire collection is Le Gel Pailleté, a clear shimmering gel highlighter that delivers a luminous glow and will make it seem like you're naturally just sweating diamonds. Stewart is also a fan of the product, telling me she put it on earlier that evening without telling Jillian Dempsey, her makeup artist, first. "I just put it on at the showing. I was literally looking at [Jillian Dempsey] and was like, 'Sorry to ruin your work. I don’t look sweaty right?' And she was like, 'To be honest, you’re kind of shining,'" says Stewart.

Unlike other highlighters that are immediately flashy, the Gel has a soft luminosity that is unassuming until it catches the light. It's glamorous and will make your cheekbones and decoletté glisten, but doesn't obnoxiously demand attention like other highlighters. For this reason, you can wear it on almost any occasion on any day. A pro-tip from Stewart on how to wear it: "[If] you keep it on the outskirts of your face, you look sort of just kissed. [Like] it came out of you somehow."

Like Le Gel Pailetté, the entire collection is simple to use. There's no right or wrong way to apply it. You'll never feel too overdone or too dewy, no matter how many coats of gloss or eyeshadow you apply. It's fairly fool-proof, which Stewart says is all thanks to Pica's creative ingenuity.

"All of the stuff that she makes, an idiot can use. Even if you’re not good at putting on makeup or even if it’s not your first interest, everything is very tactile — you can do it all with your hands. She can obviously elevate it and make it better than I can, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t take it and use it myself which kind of represents her in general," explains Stewart.

As an ambassador for the brand and the face of beauty campaigns, Stewart has had the opportunity to work with Pica closely over the years and says she has learned so much about makeup, thanks to her.

"Lucia is not who you would think orchestrates the entire makeup department at a company like Chanel. She feels so relative and in no way do I mean normal. She just feels like a friend of mine that is extremely compulsively creative," she adds.

There is one thing that Pica does want you to remember when using products from the Noir Et Blanc collection, however. While she loves an all dewy look — dewy eyes, dewy cheeks, dewy lips — be sure to minimize shine in your T-Zone. "As long as you powder the center of your face so it doesn’t look greasy, then it’s nice," Pica cautions. Otherwise, go forth and shine bright like a diamond, mes amis.

New Chanel Campaign - Noir et Blanc de Chanel Collection

A new seasonal Chanel beauty collection represents a new chapter in life. For Autumn/Winter 2019,  Lucia Pica has gone back to Gabrielle Chanel’s wisdom on noir et blanc: “Women think of all colours except the absence of colour. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.” And so came Noir Et Blanc De Chanel, a collection created by Pica that explores harmony, in line with the Modernist architecture of Paris. 

Pica has cleverly related the colours to the time in Mademoiselle Chanel’s life, saying “Black and white are the colours I relate most to Gabrielle Chanel; the time she lived in, the power she gave these colours, the way they appeared in her life. Black and white were in her surroundings, in the interiors, in the architecture of Paris as well as in the symbolism of her life.” It is the ultimate classic Chanel makeup collection: a soft, shimmering gel for the face and neck, mirroring the lighting of stage and studio. “There is an idea of extreme fantasy as well as reality in this collection, of something very stylized or delineated while embracing the day-to-day,” Pica says. “There is a certain palpability to the texture; it is so real it becomes part of your skin. At the same time the sparkle hovers above it, becoming almost like an aura, a kind of glamour…” 

Oh how we love sparkling glamour. Its all in the eyes with a new Les 4 Ombres palettes Noir Suprême with its into-the-night khaki copper brown, stormy grey, sneaky dark brown and a deep wine burgundy. The good stuff. The Modern Glamour palette is classic cinematic, with a satin white, a never-ending matte black, a shimmering silver and an intense grey. “Photographic shades.” A luminous top coat of silver sparkles comes in slick white packaging alongside the anti-gold reflector in black. And the lips. The Rouge Coco Gloss comes in Laque Noire, a heart attack deep black cherry and Crystal Clear, the ultimate translucent gloss. Liquid powders and lipsticks come in caramels, rosewoods and rosebuds. All dark, deep, drama. Into the night. Yes, this is perfect harmony.

Adir Abergel and Jillian Dempsey talk about creating Kristen's look for the Met Gala

Kristen Stewart’s look for the Met Gala 2019 was inspired by David Bowie and a bottle of nail polish.

“She immediately referenced The Man Who Fell to Earth as her inspiration,” said hairstylist Adir Abergel, creative director of Virtue Labs. “I said ‘100 percent.’”

When you look at stills of Bowie in the film, his hair is, undoubtedly red, but specifically ginger red. Stewart’s last night, on the other hand, was blazing neon red, and that’s where the nail polish came in.

“We wanted to pay homage to Karl Lagerfeld, which is where the color idea came from,” explains Abergel. “But I also wanted to add a ’90s heartthrob side to it, so we did a center part and made the hair a little floppy.”

The red in question is Chanel’s Arancio Vibrante, a bright poppy orange that, yep, popped on the ends of Stewart’s hair. L.A. colorist Daniel Moon bleached only her top layers, then painted the red on the ends, the color gradually rising closer to the roots the further back of her head it traveled.

“We matched the reds over FaceTime,” laughed Abergel. “It took Daniel only two tries, which is pretty amazing.”

Abergel hand-raked Virtue’s Un-Frizz Cream through Stewart’s ends for separation, while manicurist Ashley Johnson used the actual polish shade on her nails. Makeup artist Jillian Dempsey bleached Stewart’s brows, which was a first for the actress.

“I was so excited to de-virginize them,” enthused Dempsey. “I originally wanted to pop them out to a white color, but I removed the bleach prematurely and it was this cool banana color. Instead of toning it down, I just left them raw and punk.”

Dempsey amped the brows even further with an underline of white pencil, then dotted her eyelids with Tile Red and Bronze Taupe shades from CHANEL Les 4 Ombres in Blurry Mauve, finishing with a coat of Inimitable Mascara in Noir. The lips stayed nude with Chanel’s Rouge Coco Flash in Chicness.

 “That was one of our push-the-look moments,” explains Dempsey. “I held a fuchsia in front of her mouth just to see it, then a red, and we were like, ‘Oh hell, no. It’s got to be a nude.’”

A red lip would have been too much, even for camp — a term that first appeared in Moliere’s 1671 play The Importance of Scapin, right around the time one character instructs another to “Wear a furious look. Strut about like a drama king.” Stewart’s look might not have been furious, but it certain had drama.

“Kristen is a modern-day Bowie to me,” says Abergel, “She’s always played with gender in such a beautiful way, like Bowie did. And she’s just as fearless.”

How would you describe your aesthetic?
I think the thing that comes up again and again is that people say I make women look expensive. And I really try to get to know my clients. I see who they are and what they’re comfortable with. … When I’m working with Kristen Stewart, for example, she likes a look, and she can really sell a look too, so no matter what I do to her, she pulls it out and she feels it. That’s why those things look at home on her, whereas I don’t do that to like, Anne Hathaway, or Christina Hendricks. But Christina Hendricks looks very beautiful in a classic red lip or even a ’60s kind of look, that’s where she likes to live.

What are some of your favorite looks you’ve done recently?
Kristen at Chanel Couture was pretty great. I thought that deep teal blue eye and the orange lip was very ’80s, David Bowie-ish …. There’s a look on Elizabeth Debicki that I really liked [for TIFF], it was a pale lavender.

How did you approach Kristen’s looks for Cannes? Every one of those was so creative, like the pearl-lid one, and the amfAR one with the aqua eye and pink lip.
I always take my cue from the fashion, so whatever she’s wearing is what ends up inspiring the look. I think there are a lot of makeup artists who are strictly “makeup artists,” and they really focus on the makeup, but I’m more interested in the total look overall. … She’s a great client to have because she’s so open to trying different beauty looks and she wears them so well.
