Tara Swennen talks styling Kristen for Cannes 2026 with Vogue Magazine

Since attending her first Cannes Film Festival back in 2012, actor and director Kristen Stewart has become one of the event’s main red carpet fixtures. There is a heightened sense of glamour and extravagance that comes with attending the event, and over the years, she and stylist Tara Swennen have leaned into the challenge by delivering many, many memorable looks—from silvery Chanel couture (the year she famously removed her Louboutins!), to pink tweed skirt suits. “I love Cannes because it’s a world stage—it draws more attention than a lot of other festivals or red carpets,” Swennen tells Vogue. “Besides the Oscars—where I do think there’s a little bit of restraint—Cannes really nurtures a mixture of glamour, art, and beauty. People really take the opportunity to go big.”

This year, then, Stewart and Swennen were ready to deliver yet another winning Cannes wardrobe, one to match Stewart’s buzzy new project. In town to promote the Quentin Dupieux film Full Phil, in which she stars alongside Woody Harrelson and Emma Mackey, Stewart brought two striking, high-spirited outfits to the Cannes carpet this weekend.

And as an enduring face for Chanel, it’s no surprise that they were both courtesy of the French label. “There is a beautiful relationship between Kristen, Chanel, and Matthieu Blazy, because she activates his pieces in a different way,” says Swennen. “He’s really loosened Chanel up. When you look at his clothes, the tweeds are a little lighter, the tailoring is slouchier, and the silhouettes feel a little less rigid and lived-in. That is very much the arena that Kristen likes to live in.”

For the film’s photo call this weekend, Stewart first venture onto the Cannes Croisette saw her sporting a sheer gray “tweed” top and skirt from Chanel’s spring 2026 couture collection. “It was a lightweight take on a classic tweed. It had these frayed edges and jeweled buttons—we loved the delicacy of it, and the tension of the sheerness,” says Swennen. Though the look appeared totally-transparent, turns out, it was all an optical illusion. “It actually had these little boy shorts underneath, and a tiny, delicate camisole, so it looked more revealing than it was,” says Swennen.

Later in the evening, Stewart slipped into a more evening-ready option—a red and black knit Chanel gown from Blazy’s fall 2026 collection. “I loved the color. We just threw it on, it fit perfectly,” says Swennen. “It had these delicate crochet leaves. It felt very Chanel—but very modern and cool.”

Stewart also opted to forgo her signature makeup look. “I love that she went a little bit different in her glam as well,” Swennen says. “You don’t normally see a red lip on her, and it worked really well with her new pixie cut.” They finished off the graphic ensemble with Chanel’s High Jewelry pieces, including an itty-bitty red timepiece.

Punctuating both her daytime and nighttime looks? A signature Stewart touch: comfy sneakers by both Nike and Converse, directly plucked from the star’s own wardrobe. “We wanted to have a youthful and effortless vibe, but also have it be grounded in real movement, rather than polished perfection,” says Swennen. “It had a sophistication, but also was a bit rebellious.”

Such a footwear choice was an intriguing one, given Cannes still holds a strict dress code that discourages flat shoes, as well as sheer and voluminous designs. For Swennen, the (somewhat archaic) Cannes dressing rules are something to consider—but both she and Stewart clearly love pushing the envelope. “If it’s not trashy and people remain polished, I think [the rules are] malleable,” says Swennen. “Now, there are plenty of people circumventing the dress code—whether it be heels or transparency. It’s nice that there’s a loosening up of it. People should feel free to go and enjoy themselves and promote their art—and be authentic to themselves.”

Having worked with Stewart since she was 14, Swennen says such an attitude is precisely why the duo continue love working together. They both see red carpet dressing as an opportunity for self-expression and individuality. “It’s the ultimate collaboration, because she’s never afraid to try new things, which is great because I love a good challenge,” says Swennen. “For me, it really is always about embodying your authentic self wherever you go. She looks her best when the clothes feel instinctive to her. She never wants to feel over-rehearsed. The one thing I’ve learned about this woman is she is always going to be effortlessly cool.”

While the star’s whirlwind Cannes trip is already coming to a close (she’s back to filming her next project), Swennen says you will be seeing Stewart on a red carpet again very soon—this is not the end of their stellar France run, by any means. In late June, Stewart will be acting as the president for the Biarritz Nouvelles Vagues Festival in France. “We had virtual fittings for that while she was in Cannes,” says Swennen, hinting that “French Cruise” will be the sartorial vibe. This summer, Stewart will also be promoting her wife Dylan Meyer’s new film, The Wrong Girls, and she’s also working on a new TV show. The Stewart-Swennen partnership stays serving, all summer long.

It has been 17 years since Swennen started working with Kristen Stewart and went on to dress her for her first major red carpet collaboration during the 2007 Toronto Film Festival. “She is family,” says Swennen, who had an exceptionally busy year with the Spencer star’s jam-packed awards season calendar. “It was particularly fun because we had so many opportunities to play. Kristen is an ever-changing fashion chameleon, and we love to push boundaries.” The L.A.-based stylist, who also dresses Matthew McConaughey, estimates that they put together 50 looks for Stewart’s press tour, including casual outfits for Zooms and countless Chanel samples for the longtime face of the brand. Says Stewart: “We both love the ease that our history gives our work.” Most memorable? The Oscar nominee eschewed a traditional ball gown in favor of Chanel short-shorts, rewriting the rules of appropriate attire for Hollywood’s biggest night. “I had a very specific way I wanted to feel that night,” says Stewart. Adds Swennen: “It made waves simply because it was original and unprecedented; I’m glad it was well received.” The stylist kicked off Stewart’s press at the Venice Film Festival with a similarly short tweed Chanel romper. “Kristen’s red carpet style is uniquely hers. She is always unapologetically authentic and carries a confidence that is magnetizing.”

“It is a fun and collaborative process that develops and unfolds as we grow together,” says Swennen. Adds Stewart: “We started working together when I was 14! She has a wealth of experience that informs her eye and her taste. Tara’s loyal and she enjoys helping people feel their best.”

Over the course of her Spencer press tour this year, Kristen Stewart has brought her distinct sense of style to the many red carpets. Often in Chanel, her awards season looks have been rife with elegant gowns and bike shorts that Princess Diana herself would approve of—something the actor certainly thought of while putting together her ensembles with stylist Tara Swennen. “It’s been a daunting experience to take this character that coincidentally loved Chanel so much, just as I do,” Stewart says. “Chanel has such integrity and respect for art and for history, [and] they were the perfect partner to make sure that’s being done correctly. To make sure that it had the truth and commitment and honesty it needed.”

At the 94th annual Oscars last night, Stewart continued her relationship with Chanel, once again opting for an ensemble that channeled Princess Diana’s pared-back aesthetic. Only this time, Stewart also wanted to inject a little bit of herself into the final end result. She forwent a formal dress in favor of a more-modern shorts suit. “I really wanted to be the most honest that I possibly could, and not feel that I’m telling someone else’s story, but [instead] finding my own,” says Stewart. “It was the one opportunity to be me. I didn’t want to feel placed in an outfit—I wanted to feel an elevated elegance, and [like] it’s second skin. The right way to do this was to lean into ‘less is more,’ and allow yourself to stand in your own skin rather than put on an armor.”

Stewart’s risk-taking ensemble wasn’t without its polish. She wore a custom Chanel black satin jacket and matching shorts, paired with a white chiffon blouse—left unbuttoned in Stewart’s signature, disheveled-cool way—and simple black pumps. “I asked [Chanel designer Virginie Viard] for simple, and obviously I got the most polished and inspired version of that,” says Stewart. “I feel I pushed her in a direction [that] maybe she would not have immediately gone in, and she pushed me, too. When you pick a dress from the runway, you feel like you need to do it justice; This felt the other way around.”

To punctuate it, Stewart also wore elegant pieces from Chanel’s high jewelry collection, including a jaw-dropping 18-karat white gold necklace with onyx, spinel, and diamonds.“We wanted to create a finale look to this tour that felt authentically Kristen’s,” says Swennen. “It was a unique twist on a classical look that embodied her distinctive flair.”

For the beauty, hair stylist Adir Abergel and makeup artist Jillian Dempsey wanted Stewart’s natural beauty to shine through. Abergel used Virtue hair products and Dyson hair tools to get the grungy, wavy hair look. “I wanted to highlight the essence of Kristen with a relaxed, effortless style that had great structure,” says Abergel. “The look was  inspired by her natural texture, and the undone vibes of some of my favorite celebrity styles from the ’90s.” Dempsey, meanwhile, used Chanel makeup for a soft glam. “Tonight’s look was all about polished skin,” says Dempsey. “Clean and classic with a definite strength in the eyes—that is a signature Kristen Stewart look.” She finished it off with Chanel’s Rouge Allure L’Extrait lipstick in 812 for a pop of color. “I started in the center of the lips with the lipstick, then blended it out toward the edges to keep it modern with a natural finish,” she says. “Then, I used the Le Crayon Lèvres Longwear Lip Pencil, in nude brun, to. secure the lipstick and buffed it into the lip shade.”

Now that her Spencer tour, Stewart is likely looking forward to a little time away from the spotlight. But don’t go thinking her relationship with the French fashion house is over and done with. The actor says she looks forward to turning out many more memorable looks with Chanel—both on the big screen and red carpets carpets—in the years to come. “Chanel has been with me on every really meaningful step of my career,” says Stewart. “They were hugely cooperative with Olivier Assayas when we did Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper, as with Pablo Larrain on Spencer. I wonder how many movies we’re going to do in the future. . . Because I hope there will be a lot more.”
