Kristen talks about the Noir et Blanc de Chanel Fall-Winter Makeup Collection with Bustle

Sparkly highlighters, glittering eyeshadows, and ultra-reflective lip glosses — while all shine brightly in the light, not all are created equal. One product can make you look dewy while another can transform your cheekbones into a display of fireworks appropriate for the Fourth of July. So figuring out how to achieve that in-between — just the right amount of glimmer for day to day — can sometimes be tricky. Somehow, Chanel Beauty managed to find that delicate balance of shimmer and shine in its Fall-Winter 2019 collection.

The line — named Noir Et Blanc — was inspired by black and white, the symbolic (non) colors of Gabrielle Chanel’s life, as well as the in-between shades found throughout Paris. During a presentation for the collection in the same city, Chanel Beauty’s Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer Lucia Pica (who developed the line) shares that she found inspiration in the chilly light of the Tuileries Garden, the gleaming water of the Seine, and the cool white marble of the statues found throughout Paris. Pica also wanted to play with the “feeling of light and shadow” that she noticed while exploring the city, as well as the textures so that the products would have both austerity and softness. The result? A literally brilliant collection whose shine is bold, but natural, and will have you twinkling in a chic, Chanel way.

There are 16 different products in the Noir Et Blanc De Chanel collection and each possess the elements of "transparency and intensity" and the presence of black, white, and the colors in-between, which Pica wanted to capture. While this may sound extremely difficult to do — the act of harnessing opposites — you can really see it once you start to play with the makeup. You'll notice it immediately in the The Noir Supreme eyeshadow palette, a favorite of Pica's, which features four cream-to-velvet shades that can be found between the black and white spectrum — shimmering gray, beige, and bronze hues. You'll see it in the Carte Blanche Ombre Premiere Top Coat, which looks like a typical white glittery shadow at first, but once applied, boasts an almost wet, glimmering ocean effect that can be subtle while still making a statement.

But among the 16 are two stand-out products that you will absolutely need in your beauty arsenal this fall. First, the Laque Noire Rouge Coco Gloss, a gorgeous black lipgloss with hints of cherry that has won Kristen Stewart's heart. During the launch party for the Noir Et Blanc collection, the Chanel brand ambassador tells me that she is obsessed with the product and how versatile it can be. "I love the black lipgloss. You can put it on really thick and it can be very intense, [or you can] put a little on — it’s like 1 to 100 and everything in-between is up to you," Stewart explains.

This was no easy feat to accomplish, Pica tells me of her creation. "It was hard to find that balance between the cherry, the red, and the black, and not make it gray," she shares. "I didn’t want it to go gray or go too black or be too thick — I wanted it to stay chic." Like Stewart describes, the gloss can either create a sheer, deep red shine or an intense black glaze on your lips, but neither will leave your pout looking gaudy or feeling tacky. Thanks to Pica, the sheen is just right.

My personal favorite product of the entire collection is Le Gel Pailleté, a clear shimmering gel highlighter that delivers a luminous glow and will make it seem like you're naturally just sweating diamonds. Stewart is also a fan of the product, telling me she put it on earlier that evening without telling Jillian Dempsey, her makeup artist, first. "I just put it on at the showing. I was literally looking at [Jillian Dempsey] and was like, 'Sorry to ruin your work. I don’t look sweaty right?' And she was like, 'To be honest, you’re kind of shining,'" says Stewart.

Unlike other highlighters that are immediately flashy, the Gel has a soft luminosity that is unassuming until it catches the light. It's glamorous and will make your cheekbones and decoletté glisten, but doesn't obnoxiously demand attention like other highlighters. For this reason, you can wear it on almost any occasion on any day. A pro-tip from Stewart on how to wear it: "[If] you keep it on the outskirts of your face, you look sort of just kissed. [Like] it came out of you somehow."

Like Le Gel Pailetté, the entire collection is simple to use. There's no right or wrong way to apply it. You'll never feel too overdone or too dewy, no matter how many coats of gloss or eyeshadow you apply. It's fairly fool-proof, which Stewart says is all thanks to Pica's creative ingenuity.

"All of the stuff that she makes, an idiot can use. Even if you’re not good at putting on makeup or even if it’s not your first interest, everything is very tactile — you can do it all with your hands. She can obviously elevate it and make it better than I can, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t take it and use it myself which kind of represents her in general," explains Stewart.

As an ambassador for the brand and the face of beauty campaigns, Stewart has had the opportunity to work with Pica closely over the years and says she has learned so much about makeup, thanks to her.

"Lucia is not who you would think orchestrates the entire makeup department at a company like Chanel. She feels so relative and in no way do I mean normal. She just feels like a friend of mine that is extremely compulsively creative," she adds.

There is one thing that Pica does want you to remember when using products from the Noir Et Blanc collection, however. While she loves an all dewy look — dewy eyes, dewy cheeks, dewy lips — be sure to minimize shine in your T-Zone. "As long as you powder the center of your face so it doesn’t look greasy, then it’s nice," Pica cautions. Otherwise, go forth and shine bright like a diamond, mes amis.

'Seberg' will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival 2019

'Seberg' will have it's North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

This biopic of actor Jean Seberg features a searing performance by Kristen Stewart in the titular role, and tells the story of an artist destined for fame — and crushed by notoriety.

She made her screen debut at 18, playing Joan of Arc. By 21, she would be immortalized in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, the film that launched the French New Wave. But Jean Seberg never quite took to stardom. She was restless. As the 1960s became more radicalized, so did she — to the extent that she became a person of interest for the FBI. This searing biopic stars Kristen Stewart in her finest work to date, embodying Seberg at what would prove to be her life's turning point.

The film opens in May 1968. After years of living in Paris with her second husband, Romain Gary, Jean returns to Hollywood for solitude and work, but finds herself more engaged with the Black Panthers than Paint Your Wagon. Her support for the Black Power movement earns the notice of the Feds, who begin monitoring her every move, paying special attention to her affair with married activist Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie, also at the Festival in SYNCHRONIC). Agent Jack Solomon (Jack O'Connell, also at the Festival in Jungleland) is assigned to Jean's file, but the more he immerses himself in her life, the more he empathizes with this woman whose privacy is slowly being destroyed.

Written by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel and directed by Benedict Andrews (Una, TIFF '16), Seberg depicts a turbulent clash of glamour and politics. Cinematographer Rachel Morrison (Mudbound, TIFF '17) invokes an ambiance of paranoia, with haunting images of a woman who has nowhere left to hide. At the core of Seberg is Stewart, who seems to have fused herself with her character completely. This is an indelible portrait of an artist destined for fame — and crushed by notoriety.

'Seberg' will premiere at TIFF on Saturday 7 September at 6.00pm ET.

There will be a press conference on Sunday 8 September at 1.00pm (via Gossipgyal).
A livestream will be made available to watch it.

It will have other screenings during the festival on 9 September and 14 September.

Justin Kelly talks 'JT Leroy' and mentions Kristen with the Mirror UK

Tackling extreme true stories of identity has become the bread and butter of director Justin Kelly.

The American filmmaker has worked with inspiration from directing legends like Gus Van Sant and Todd Haynes to deliver acclaimed hits such as the biopic on gay activist Michael Glatze entitled I Am Michael starring Zachary Quinto and James Franco, and gay porn crime drama King Cobra featuring Franco and Christian Slater.

Now Kelly brings us the stunning true story of JT LeRoy, which charters the literary hoax around the author avatar of the same name.

The film sees writer Laura Albert (Laura Dern) persuades her husband's (Jim Sturgess) sibling Savannah Knoop (Kristen Stewart) to help her portray a fictional literary persona as the eponymous JT LeRoy and deliver apparently semi-autobiographical tales of drug use, sexual abuse, and blurred gender identity.

However, the hoax soon begins to cause major emotional crises for all those involved.

JT LeRoy also stars rock legend Courtney Love and acclaimed actress Diane Kruger.

Mirror Online spoke with Justin Kelly regarding what drew him to this bizarre real-life tale, how Stewart and Dern got involved with the film, and what is next for him to tackle in upcoming film Weetzie Bat.

What drew you to tackle the story of JT LeRoy and how did you get the film made?

Well, I read the first book Sarah, and was drawn to its weird, queer outsider presence. It was a unique book, but I was mostly interested in him [JT LeRoy] as a persona - the wig, the glasses, the shrouded secret identity.

And once the story broke and he didn't actually exist - this was even more fascinating than his books and by chance, I met Savannah Knoop and read their memoir and was blown away by the kind of information that wasn't out there and understood why they did it.

It started with quite a few years of rewriting the script by the time Kristen got it.

We had had 7 years of back and forth with rewrites and Savannah was working on other things, while we worked on other films to help get it off the ground.

What was it like working with Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern?

It was a fantasy to get them both and we were so lucky they responded to the material and we met up with them and they really understood these two people.

We really wanted them and they wanted to play the part.

Did Kristen Stewart spend much time with the real Savannah Knoop?

They hung out a few times in Los Angeles to get to know each other before the shoot - not quite talking in-depth on personal details at that point, but Savannah later visited the set and met up with Kristen and also Laura, along with Savannah’s brother, as played by Jim Sturgess in the film.

Savannah ended up staying for the entire shoot and was available to speak about anything.

How did Kristen and Laura approach their characters?

Kristen wanted a lot of information about Savannah’s life away from JT too, even more than I had wanted from her.

She had adopted these plugs in her jaw line to appear more masculine that weren't even that important to me but they really helped to capture Savannah.

They were both so incredibly dedicated to character but it was to an extreme point and in such a great way - to think about every word and every maneuver and gesture. It was very exciting for me and Savannah to watch.

It helped to go through the script page by page and go through it all together for their input on makeup and hair.

Kristen is definitely more internalised about her decision making and Laura more talkative, but they had their chemistry.

The 2020 Pirelli Calendar by Paolo Roversi entitled ‘Looking for Juliet’. The photographer’s project, which involves actresses and singers of different cultures and countries, takes its cue from the Shakespearean drama and the intersection of love, strength, youth and beauty embodied by its female protagonist.

The protagonists of “Looking for Juliet” were invited by the photographer to present the role of Juliet in an ideal casting session that sees them act, pose, sing; each through their own emotion, art form, personality, character and interpretation of the role.

Roversi chose nine personalities to interpret the role of Juliet. They include the British actors Claire Foy, Mia Goth and the British actor and activist Emma Watson, the American actors Indya Moore, Yara Shahidi and Kristen Stewart, the Chinese singer Chris Lee, the Spanish singer Rosalia, and the Franco-Italian artist Stella Roversi.

Shot in Paris and Verona over a week in May, Roversi says of his calendar: “I am still searching for my Juliet and I will be searching all my life. Because Juliet is a dream”.

Interview with photographer, Paolo Roversi:

PAOLO What makes you the actress you are today?

KRISTEN It’s weird because for me acting is kind of the least performative thing I’ve ever had to do. When it feels like discovering, and it feels like there’s an accumulative effort to dig something up, and you don’t quite know what it is —there’s a surprise to that. And there’s learning. When I watch movies I want to see people learning things. I don’t want to see people telling you, I don’t want to learn lessons; I want to watch people stumble upon things that shock them and scare them. Then you can kind of project, and go on that ride with them. I can’t say I accomplish this all the time, but what I really hope to do is lose control completely and find something unexpected. And for me, for when I watch films, my favourite actors are sprawling, you know.

PAOLO Does it take time for you to come out of yourself when you are in the part?

KRISTEN Well, we have so many versions of ourselves inside of us. I’m never trying to lie and be someone I’m not. My favourite thing about my job, and what I get to do as expression, is to surprise myself and go “Oh my god, I didn’t know that I had this in me.”

PAOLO Even a Juliet?

KRISTEN I would never play a part that I didn’t find deeply hidden in myself somewhere—even if it was a lesser known facet, it’s still in there. I could never play someone that I wasn’t, because that’s just a lie.

PAOLO You look like a very pure person and a rebel at the same time. Juliet was a rebel in a way too.

KRISTEN The ultimate, yeah.

PAOLO She went against all the rules; she fell in love with the enemy, secretly married him, and took the poison...
