How would you describe your aesthetic?
I think the thing that comes up again and again is that people say I make women look expensive. And I really try to get to know my clients. I see who they are and what they’re comfortable with. … When I’m working with Kristen Stewart, for example, she likes a look, and she can really sell a look too, so no matter what I do to her, she pulls it out and she feels it. That’s why those things look at home on her, whereas I don’t do that to like, Anne Hathaway, or Christina Hendricks. But Christina Hendricks looks very beautiful in a classic red lip or even a ’60s kind of look, that’s where she likes to live.

What are some of your favorite looks you’ve done recently?
Kristen at Chanel Couture was pretty great. I thought that deep teal blue eye and the orange lip was very ’80s, David Bowie-ish …. There’s a look on Elizabeth Debicki that I really liked [for TIFF], it was a pale lavender.

How did you approach Kristen’s looks for Cannes? Every one of those was so creative, like the pearl-lid one, and the amfAR one with the aqua eye and pink lip.
I always take my cue from the fashion, so whatever she’s wearing is what ends up inspiring the look. I think there are a lot of makeup artists who are strictly “makeup artists,” and they really focus on the makeup, but I’m more interested in the total look overall. … She’s a great client to have because she’s so open to trying different beauty looks and she wears them so well.

A lot of my looks on Kristen Stewart are my prouder moments. She’s very eccentric with makeup, and she kind of lets me do my thing. We push in a way that I don’t think is typical for red carpet looks.

In a world filled with online bullies and worst-dressed list, it can be daunting to break the mold when you're in the spotlight. That is, unless you've got a trusted friend by your side behind the scenes.

Kristen Stewart, Young Hollywood's crown jewel, is anything but play-it-safe when it comes to her beauty looks - and that's in large part thanks to makeup artist turned close friend Beau Nelson. "Kristen has a rebellious spirit. She doesn't want to look like everyone else - she wants to do it better," he says of his longtime client.

"I know when I work with [Beau] that he's excited to show people something they've never seen before," Kristen tells Teen Vogue. "It's not a job to him. It really is his art." When the pair do venture into more conventional Old Hollywood beauty territory, it's always with a clever twist. At this year's Cannes Film Festival, at left, Kristen rocked electric-red lips paired with a dewy taupe shimmer on her eyes. And Beau made sure to showcase her favorite feature: "Kristen loves her freckles," he says. "I taught her how to apply foundation with a damp sponge so it won't cover them up."

Now in their fourth year of working together, the duo seem to have the most fun when the makeup comes off. "One time we stayed out all night singing karaoke," Beau says with a laugh. "I feel like she's a little sister to me."

Far from the public eye, the starlet taught him the most important beauty lesson of all: "I've learned from her that as much as we play with makeup, she's the most beautiful naturally," Beau says. "She knows who she is. I respect and love that about her."
