Jill Lawless Cannes Interview with Kristen & Cast of OTR

CANNES, France (AP) - Kristen Stewart understands the lure of the open road. So do her "On The Road" co-stars, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.

The three young actors play the central love triangle in Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's Beat Generation novel, an experience that has helped them appreciate why the book is considered a classic.

The tale of wannabe writer (and Kerouac surrogate) Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty crisscrossing the United States in search of freedom and the elusive "it" was published in 1957. But Stewart said the way it captures the heady feeling of young adulthood is timeless.

"You're so filled with something that is hard to identify at this age," said the "Twilight" star, who plays Dean's teenage bride Marylou, a free spirit torn between the lure of adventure and desire for a more settled life.

"You're just bursting, and (the characters) value that so much," said Stewart, who is just 22 herself. "They don't ignore it. That celebration of youth and exploration is just something that you envy.

"I read it right at the point when I was about to get my (driver's) license, and I thought, wow, I want to meet people who push me the way people push each other. I wanted to be more like them."
...
The director said he was determined to cast Stewart even before "Twilight" made her a star, after he heard raves about her performance in Sean Penn's 2007 Alaskan drama "Into The Wild."

"I remember writing down the name," Salles said, "so I wouldn't forget it."

"On The Road" Director Walter Salles Talks Casting Kristen as Marylou

Estado.com: "Most of the cast was invited early in the process, five years ago. Kirsten Dunst was the first person I met to talk about Camille. Garrett Hedlund appeared in audition, coming directly from the farm where he lived in Minnesota, near Fargo, the city where the Coen brothers filmed. He brought a text about the trip he had made. It was as remarkable as his test. Sam Riley also did a great test after I've seen Control , and I was amazed by his performance as Ian Curtis. Kristen Stewart was invited almost as soon as Kirsten Dunst, thanks to Gustavo Santaolalla and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who had seen the first cut of the film by Sean Penn, Into the Wild . They said that we could stop looking for Marylou, because we just saw a 16 years old girl that was perfect for the role. I remember I had to make a note of Kristen´s name at that time."

Folha.com: "The difficulties we encountered were mainly due to the complexity of the project and the need to make the film with a small budget [U.S. $ 25 million]. But the limits have worked in favor of the film." Other items helped production, as the passion of the actors for the original book. That´s the case of Kristen Stewart, who lives Marylou. "'On the Road' was one of her favorite book," says Salles, who directed the star of "Twilight" with no problem, even in scenes of total nudity. "There is a quality of freedom in Marylou, a desire for experimentation and Kristen knew well." Sam Riley, who plays Kerouac's alter ego, Sal Paradise, and Garrett Hedlund (his friend Dean Moriarty), embarked soon after. But who was impressive was Viggo Mortensen in the role of William Burroughs. "He came ready to the set, with the clothes of the character, the typewriter and the gun he used in 1949. It was an impressive transformation."

Kristen at no. 11 in Total Film's "The 30 Hottest Rising Actors Right Now"

No. 11 Kristen Stewart

Who? Stewart’s name will always be synonymous with Twilight, 2008’s surprise monster hit, which spawned four sequels.

Why So Hot? Stewart achieved years of critical acclaim in indie films like Speak and Into The Wild, but Twlight pushed her into the big time. She's since stuck to her roots with smaller productions – taking a role opposite Jesse Eisenberg in Adventureland, with fellow Twilight alumni Dakota Fanning in The Runaways, and then as MaryLou in the controversial novel adaptation On The Road.
Having paid her dues, she's now heading back into studio fare, taking the lead in Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman, due out next June.

What’s Next? The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, the penultimate film in the series, is due out this November.

Old interview with Sean Penn about 'Into the Wild', mentions casting Kristen "she is so beautiful..."

Q. How did you put together the rest of the cast?

I was reluctant about Kristen Stewart because she is so beautiful, but there was something underneath her that convinced me, because despite her looks it's her inner beauty that truly is the star.
