New Project: Kristen confirmed to star in 'Charlie's Angels' + Production Details
Charlie and Sony have found their Angels.
Naomi Scott, who is starring as Jasmine in Disney's upcoming Aladdin remake, and British newcomer Ella Balinska are set to join Kristen Stewart in the studio's new Charlie's Angels reboot.
Elizabeth Banks, who is directing the project, will also take a role in front of the camera: She will play Bosley, the face of the enigmatic and never-seen owner of the detective agency, Charlie Townsend.
The new story takes the detective agency premise of the original television series and turn-of-the new century movies and takes it global, with the Townsend Agency now a worldwide security and intelligence service that has teams around the planet. The movie will focus on one of those teams and the next generation of Angels.
"Charlie's Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the '70s," said Banks in a statement. "This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn't be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world."
The new project has Banks' imprint on all levels. In addition to being in front and behind the camera, Banks wrote the latest draft of the script with Jay Basu (The Girl in the Spider's Web), working off of earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas.
Banks is also producing the project with husband Max Handelman via their Brownstone Productions banner, as well as Doug Belgrad, who is co-financing through his 2.0 Entertainment, and Elizabeth Cantillon.
Sony is setting a Sept. 27, 2019, release for the new movie.
British-born Scott appeared on TV's Terra Nova and starred in 2017's live-action Power Rangers movie before nabbing the high-profile role of Jasmine in Aladdin. That movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, opens May 24, 2019. She is repped by WME, Echo Lake Entertainment and Sloane Offer.
Angels will be a big break for Balinska, who has only appeared in two television episodes, one of them in the U.K.'s long-running series Midsomer Murders, and the other an indie titled A Modern Tale. She is repped by UTA and Identity Agency Group.
Banks, who will be seen in The Happytime Murders and heard in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, last directed the hit Pitch Perfect 2. She is repped by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.

Update: 18 September (via THR)
Patrick Stewart is in final negotiations to join Elizabeth Banks’ reboot of Charlie’s Angels.
Kristen Stewart, Aladdin actress Naomi Scott and British newcomer Ella Balinska are starring as the Angels in the Sony feature project, which Banks is directing, producing and acting in.
The new story takes the female-fronted detective-agency premise of the original 1976-81 TV series and 2000 and 2003 movies global, with the Townsend Agency now a security and intelligence service that has teams around the world. The movie will focus on one of those teams and the next generation of Angels.
In a twist on the usual proceedings, the project seems to have multiple characters named Bosley, who in the past acted as the face of the enigmatic and never-seen owner of the detective agency, Charlie Townsend. Banks is set to play Bosley, with sources telling The Hollywood Reporter that Stewart is also playing a Bosley.
Banks and Jay Basu (The Girl in the Spider's Web) wrote the script, working off of earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas, and the story is said to build on what's come previously.
Producing with Banks are her husband, Max Handelman; Doug Belgrad, who is also co-financing through his 2.0 Entertainment; and Elizabeth Cantillon.
Stewart, who made Professor X in the X-Men movies one of his signature roles, will be soon reprising another popular part, Star Fleet Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, on a new Star Trek television series being developed for CBS All Access.

Sony’s Columbia Pictures is releasing the pic, based on the original 1970s ABC series, which was followed by two films: Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003). Since the original films, The Townsend Agency has grown considerably and gone global, providing security and intelligence services to a wide variety of private clients with offices and highly-trained teams worldwide. It’s Sony, Angels. We have a new date for you to go to work. The studio said tonight that its reboot of Charlie’s Angels now will open wide on November 1, 2019 — five weeks after its original date.
The nerdiest of veteran studio release-date watchers also might recognize that date: It’s the same weekend frame when the first Charlie’s Angels movie opened in 2000.
