The concept stemmed from the night’s In America: A Lexicon of Fashion theme and the star’s thoughts on the differences between homegrown fashion and Gallic style. “I wanted to take Chanel, which is typically effortless, classic, bold and give it a real American over the top energy,” shared Stewart post-event. “The French aesthetic, to me, is always natural [and] quietly commanding. I wanted this to be try-hard American in the best way. “
Executing that concept allowed Stewart and stylist Tara Swennen to get creative and layer on the Chanel accessories. Stewart’s Comète Spirale white gold and diamond ring, gem-studded Boyfriend watch, and silver mini-classic flap bag added to the drama. Makeup artist Jillian Dempsey then transformed Stewart using Chanel Beauty staples like the rose-tone Candeur et Séduction eyeshadow palette and Boy de Chanel lip balm to create a soft-focus yet striking makeup look.
After attending eight Met Galas, Stewart is used to the ins and outs of the event. Still, this year’s affair was memorable. After nearly a decade as the face of Chanel, an evening seated at the brand’s table was a chance to catch up with old friends and make a few new ones. "My favorite part is hanging with the crew that Chanel pulls together,” says Stewart. “They know how to assemble a fun, fascinated, and fascinating bunch.” The night’s big surprise performance—a special set from Justin Bieber—didn’t hurt either. “I’m a huge Justin Bieber fan,” says Stewart. “That was the best part of my night!”
