IFC Films acquires distribution rights for 'Certain Women' in the US

Kelly Reichardt directed the movie, which is based on the Montana-based short stories of Maile Meloy

IFC Films is acquiring U.S. rights to Kelly Reichardt‘s Montana-set drama “Certain Women,” which stars Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern, the company announced Wednesday.

Written and directed by Reichardt, the film debuted at Sundance and will be released later this year.

James Le Gros, Jared Harris, René Auberjonois and breakout talent Lily Gladstone co-star in “Certain Women,” which is based on the short stories of Maile Meloy.

Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino and Anish Savjani of filmscience produced the film, which was executive produced by Todd Haynes and Larry Fessenden. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions’ Stage 6 Films acquired worldwide rights to “Certain Women” prior to the start of production and will distribute the film internationally. In “Certain Women,” the lives of a lawyer, a ranch hand and a married couple intersect across the state of Montana, where the men are struggling to get their lives right in the face of aging, injury, bad luck and wrong moves — and the women are imperfectly blazing a trail. Laura (Dern) is sent in to calm her client Fuller (Harris) during a hostage situation. A quasi-land grab is orchestrated by Gina (Williams), whose husband Ryan (Le Gros) reluctantly goes along with it. A ranch hand (Gladstone) is left to long for Elizabeth (Stewart), who passes through town while she stays at the ranch and tends to her chores.

The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, SVP of acquisitions from Sundance Selects/IFC Films, with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.

'Personal Shopper' starts shooting on October 27 + synopsis and more details on the film

Shoot to commence in Paris on Oct 27 before heading to Prague, London and Oman.

Olivier Assayas’s English-language Personal Shopper, reuniting him with US actress Kristen Stewart, is due to start shooting in Paris next week, its producers have announced.

Described as “a ghost story set on the fringes of the fashion world”, Kristen Stewart plays a personal shopper to the stars with psychic powers that she once shared with a recently deceased twin brother.

Other cast members include Sigrid Bouaziz, Lars Eidinger, Anders Danielsen Lie, Nora von Waldstätten.

Shooting will start on Oct 27, for two weeks, before heading to Prague, London and Oman.

Assayas and Stewart previously collaborated on Sils Maria, alongside Juliette Binoche, for which she went on to win a César for best supporting actress.

Charles Gillibert, who also produced Assyas’s Sils Maria and Summer Hours (L’heure d’été), is lead producer on the project with support from co-producers German Detail Film, Belgian Scope Invest and Czech Sirena Film.

IFC has acquired US rights while Les Films du Losange is handling French distribution. Other French backers include Arte France Cinéma and Canal Plus.

IFC Films acquires 'Anesthesia' in North America for a release in 2016

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to the Kristen Stewart starrer Anesthesia.

Written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson, the drama also stars Glenn Close, Sam Waterston and Gretchen Mol. UTA had been selling Anesthesia at the Cannes film market.

IFC plans to give the film a day-and-date release in 2016.

The story kicks off after the violent mugging of a Columbia University professor.

The film, which premiered in April at the Tribeca Film Festival, was produced by Nelson, Julie Buck, Josh Hetzler, John Molli and Christopher J. Scott.

IFC Films Acquires North American Rights to "Camp X-Ray"

IFC Films announced today that the company is acquiring North American rights to Peter Sattler’s directorial debut film CAMP X-RAY. The film, with a screenplay by Sattler, stars Kristen Stewart, Payman Maadi and Lane Garrison, and was produced by Gina Kwon, and executive produced by Emmy Ellison, Lindsay Williams, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, David Gordon Green and Sophia Lin.   The film made its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section.

In the film, a young woman (Stewart) joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots, but ends up as a rookie guard at Guantanamo Bay. Her mission is far from black and white, as she is surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive male squadmates. When she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees (A Separation‘s Maadi), both of their worlds are forever shifted. Written and directed by Peter Sattler, CAMP X-RAYis a deeply human story of two people, on opposite sides of a war, trapped and struggling to find a way to live together.

“Peter Sattler has made a stirring, sensitive and thought-provoking film that features two powerhouse performances by Payman Maadi and Kristen Stewart,” says Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. “Maadi proves once again that he is a force to be reckoned with and Stewart undoubtedly gives the best and most moving performance of her already remarkable career.”

When I got my chance to chat with Stewart who is here (with her mother too) for her first Cannes ever, she told me she didn’t know what to make of the visible glowing reaction from the Grand Lumiere crowd after the film ended. “It was a very surreal experience for me. I didn’t know what to think. But if they had all roundly booed us I believe everyone in our row would have stood up and said ‘yeah, you go!’,” she said in the counter-cultural spirit of the film’s characters who behave in anything but conventional ways.

Stewart has some topless nude scenes in the film which epouses sexual freedom even in the uptight era of the 50′s in which the beatnik story is set. For her playing Marylou (based on Luanne Henderson who at age 15 married Neal Cassady – known in the film as Dean Moriarty) was a challenge and one she was eager to take.

Salles had seen her in Into The Wild and cast her in 2007 before Twilight turned her into a pop culture icon. Like most of the cast members she had to hang in there for a while before it finally came to fruition. Her agents urged her to drop out. “They kept saying ‘don’t do it’. It’s not on the page’ but I disagreed and I am so glad we all did it. I do relate to her in some ways but I am nothing like Marylou at all. I internalize everything. She’s the opposite,” she said. It certainly worked out. Stewart delivers here and audiences will see a side of the star they haven’t seen before.

IFC and Sundance Selects will distribute the film but it won’t be part of their VOD platform, but rather a major theatrical release. IFC’s and Sundance Selects President Jonathan Sehring, also at the party, said he couldn’t be higher on the film and they plan to open it in December and mount a major awards campaign. “We are going for it in a big way,” he said. “And initially I was skeptical about the whole thing. I didn’t know if it could work. I had never really seen a good Beat film done right before but Walter has done a magnificent job and all the actors are great. “She’s great,” he said pointing to Kristen Stewart who was standing in a nearby corner of the party talking with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson (RPatz is in Cannes for his own premiere on Friday, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis).
