'Happiest Season' will be released on Hulu in the US on 25 November

Hulu is decking the halls for “Happiest Season,” a rare mainstream holiday comedy centered on two women in love.

The streamer has picked up domestic distribution rights to the Clea DuVall-directed film. Original distributor and co-financier Sony Pictures will retain rights in Canada and the rest of the world.

The move is unsurprising as the coronavirus pandemic leaves many American movie theaters shuttered. The film, led by Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis, will now premiere as a Hulu Original on Wednesday, Nov. 25.

“This holiday season — more than any other — we could all use a little happiness. It was essential to Sony Pictures and to the filmmakers that Clea’s marvelous and fresh holiday-themed romantic comedy come out when the lights are on the trees,” said Nicole Brown, president of TriStar Pictures. “We are excited that Hulu is geared up to make this happen in the U.S. and grateful that they love the movie as much as we do.”

Brian Kendig, director of content acquisition at Hulu, said the service was “honored to be the streaming home of this fresh and funny romantic comedy that explores love, family and acceptance this holiday season.”

eOne co-financed the film with Sony. Overseas plans, including potential theatrical releases, will be finalized in the coming weeks.

DuVall directs and co-wrote the script with Mary Holland, who also delivers a breakout comedic supporting performance in the film. Marty Bowen and Isaac Klausner produced, with Wyck Godfrey and Jonathan McCoy as executive producers.

Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Daniel Levy, Burl Moseley, Victor Garber and Mary Steenburgen also costar.

“I am beyond grateful to Hulu for providing an incredible home for ‘Happiest Season,’ and I’ll forever cherish my journey with Sony Pictures who felt just as strongly as I did about the value of bringing the first major LGBTQ+ holiday rom-com to audiences,” said DuVall. “I’m hopeful that this universal story, told through a unique lens, will join the long list of holiday classics that continue to bring all of us so much joy and happiness.”

Read the full synopsis for “Happiest Season”:

Meeting your girlfriend’s family for the first time can be tough. Planning to propose at her family’s annual Christmas dinner — until you realize that they don’t even know she’s gay — is even harder. When Abby (Kristen Stewart) learns that Harper (Mackenzie Davis) has kept their relationship a secret from her family, she begins to question the girlfriend she thought she knew. Happiest Season is a holiday romantic comedy that hilariously captures the range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas.

'Seberg' is released on December 13 in the US to qualify for award season. It will be a limited release showing in theatres in Los Angeles and New York.

It will then be released wider in the US on February 21.

Theaters playing 'Seberg' from December 13:

------------

After making its limited qualifying run this Friday, Amazon Studios’ Seberg which stars Kristen Stewart as French New Wave icon and FBI target Jean Seberg will have a platform release starting Feb. 21.

The noir thriller directed by Benedict Andrews and written by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival before continuing to TIFF, Deuville and the London Film Festival among many others.

Breathless star Seberg was the center of the FBI’s attention in the late 1960s because of her support of the civil rights movement and romantic involvement with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), among others. Seberg’s life and career are destroyed by J. Edgar Hoover’s overreaching surveillance and harassment in an effort to suppress and discredit the actress’ activism.

'Seberg' will be released in the US on 13 December 2019

Amazon Studios has set December 13 as the opening day for its Kristen Stewart-starring Jean Seberg biopic Seberg.

In the movie, Stewart plays the French New Wave and Breathless star Seberg, who in the late 1960s was targeted by the FBI because of her support of the civil rights movement and romantic involvement with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), among others. In Benedict Andrews’ noir-ish thriller, Seberg’s life and career are destroyed by Hoover’s overreaching surveillance and harassment in an effort to suppress and discredit Seberg’s activism.

The pic, directed by Andrews and written by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, received a seven-minute standing ovation out of its Venice Film Festival premiere. Stewart was recently honored at the Deauville American Film Festival, where director Olivier Assayas presented her with the Talent Award. She will also be receiving the Golden Eye Award at the Zurich Film Festival early next month, then will continue on to the Mill Valley Film Festival where she will be lauded with the Spotlight Award.

Other notable fall festival stops include the BFI London Film Festival, San Sebastian Film Festival, Aspen Film Festival and Chicago Film Festival.

Shrapnel is also an EP on the film. Jack O’Connell, Margaret Qualley, Zazie Beetz, Yvan Attal, Stephen Root, Colm Meaney and Vince Vaughn also star. Producers are Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh Jones of Automatik, Marina Acton, Alan Ritchson, Kate Garwood, Stephen Hopkins and Brad Pilz.

Ted Hope, co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios said, “Kristen Stewart wholly engrossed herself into becoming Jean Seberg in this searing, raw portrayal about transformation. This performance is the culmination of years of hard work, that is one of the best of her career, which will astonish audiences everywhere. Coming out of Venice and Toronto, she has received rave reviews and unanimous acclaim for this exceptional performance. We are excited to share this beautiful and unforgettable story with theatrical audiences and our customers.”

Later this year, Amazon Studios will release in theaters Tom Harper’s The Aeronauts starring Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne; Scott Z. Burns’ The Report starring Adam Driver and Annette Bening; Honey Boy from director Alma Har’el, based on a script written by Shia LaBeouf; Karim Aïnouz’s Invisible Life, Brazil’s official submission for International Feature Film; and Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables which was recently announced as France’s official submission for International Feature Film.

'Charlie's Angels' will now be released in the US on 15 November 2019

'Charlie's Angels' will now be released on November 15.

The Elizabeth Banks directed reboot of Sony’s Charlie’s Angels will jump from its Nov. 1 release date to Nov. 15.

As Sony looks to boast its franchises, which it has done marvelously with Jumanji and Venom, the new release date for Charlie’s Angels allows this rebooted series to potentially blossom again, away from the 35-year old Terminator tentpole series. Not only that, but there’s confidence that there’s plenty of global appeal in Charlie’s Angels, hence the new release date. The new date gives Charlie’s Angels a jump on Thanksgiving as well. Also, Fox’s Kingsman 3 just departed the slot.

Other upsides to Nov. 15: On the same weekend, Charlie’s Angels star Kristen Stewart had four of her Twilight movies crush it, not to mention it’s also where director Banks’ Hunger Games movies have launched. Furthermore, the school holiday calendar is more favorable toward the end of November.

After Wonder Woman 1984 fled the first weekend in November for summer 2020, Sony was the first to book Nov. 1 Charlie’s Angels on the evening of Oct. 22 last year. That’s because the original Drew Barrymore-Cameron Diaz-Lucy Liu movie first bowed over the first weekend n November 19 years ago. But then Paramount/Skydance/Fox’s Terminator: Dark Fate jumped on the Nov. 1 opening date the following morning, Oct. 23.

Charlie’s Angels will face off against Fox’s James Mangold Ford vs. Ferrari (awards season counter-programming), Warner Bros. The Good Liar, Universal’s Last Christmas, and Orion’s untitled horror movie.

'Certain Women' will be released in US theaters on 14 October 2016

PRESENTED BY IFC FILMS | UNITED STATES | OCT 14TH, 2016 | 107 MINS | R

One of America’s foremost filmmakers, Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff) directs a remarkable ensemble cast led by Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, and Laura Dern in this stirring look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer (Dern) who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand (radiant newcomer Lily Gladstone). As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.

'Cafe Society' will have a limited release on July 15 & go wide by July 29 in the US

Cafe Society has been give a traditional platform rollout from Lionsgate and Amazon Studios, with the Woody Allen-directed comedy getting a limited release on July 15, after which it will expand on July 22, and will finally go wide on July 29.

The previous plan was for the film to go wide on Aug. 12.

Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart star in the Annie Hall director's take on 1930s Hollywood, which will be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate and Amazon Studios have changed their release plans on Woody Allen’s Cannes Film Festival opener Cafe Society. During CinemaCon, we were told by reliable sources that the film was going wide on August 12. Instead, Cafe Society now will open limited on July 15, expand July 22 and go wide July 29.

It was surprising to hear Cafe Society was going to open wide, which is uncommon for an Allen film. Platform sounds right, particularly during the summer art-house period and the fact that adults don’t all arrive at the theater during opening weekend. And August 12 would have been a vicious time to take an Allen title wide, with Paramount making a go at adults with Florence Foster Jenkins, plus such wide entries as Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, Sony’s Sausage Party and Universal’s Spectral.

Cafe Society kicks off Cannes on May 11.

TriStar Pictures has slated the wartime drama Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, from director Ang Lee, for release on Veterans Day, November 11, 2016. The 3-D film is using new, high-res cameras with a frame rate that will allow audiences to experience drama, including the heightened sensation that soldiers really feel on the battlefield and on the home front. According to BlackFilm

Sundance Selects has announced that CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA, the stunning new film from Olivier Assayas (SUMMER HOURS, CARLOS) starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloë Grace Moretz, will open in New York and Los Angeles on April 10, with a national rollout to follow.

A multi-layered, richly observed meditation on acting, aging and female relationships, the film premiered in competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and was also featured at the Toronto and New York film festivals. CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA

Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is an actress at the peak of her international career who is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years earlier. Back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young woman who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria, a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself.
