On Thursday August 22nd, the filming of Olivier Assayas’s 14th cinematographic feature film will begin: Sils Maria. A regular at big festivals (in competition in 2000, 2002 and 2004 in Cannes where he also presented the mini-series Carlos [trailer] out of competition in 2010, and Best Screenplay Prize in Venice last year with Something In The Air [trailer, film focus, festival scope]), the director brought together a first class international cast for his new opus:  French star Juliette Binoche (appreciated this year in Camille Claudel 1915), American actresses Kristen Stewart (famous all around the world since the Twilight saga) and Chloë Moretz (Hugo Cabret), German star Daniel Brühl (recently appreciated in Eva [trailer] and soon on screens in Rush) and British actor Tom Sturridge (Good Morning England).

Written by the director, the screenplay focuses on actress Maria Enders (Binoche). 20 years after becoming famous by playing the role of Sigrid, a character who fascinated that of Helena and led her to suicide, Maria, at the top of her international career, is asked to take part in the play again, but this time in the role of Helena.

Kristen Stewart will be the personal assistant of Maria, Chloë Moretz the young actress who takes over the role of Sigrid, Tom Sturridge her boyfriend and Daniel Brühl the theatre’s director.

Produced by Charles Gillibert (an experienced professional who worked on feature films by Dolan, Kiarostami, Kechiche, Salles and van Sant and already worked with Assayas twice) for the new Parisian company CG Cinéma, Sils Maria is coproduced by the Germans from Pallas Film, the Swiss company CAB Productions, Vortex Sutra, Arte France Cinéma, Orange Studio and RTS (Radio Télévision Suisse). Pre-purchased by ZDF, Canal+, NFP, Filmcoopi and IFC, the film is also backed by the Programme Media, Eurimages, the Franco-German mini coproduction treaty, Cinéforom, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung and the BLS Südtirol Alto Adige Film Fund & Commission. The filming will take place in Germany, Switzerland and Italy until October 4. The French distribution will be handled by Les Films du Losange and international sales by MK2.

  1. Just read on Charles Gillibert's Twitter that Tom Sturridge has dropped out due to his role in Far From The Maddening Crowd. Filming conflict, and his part was only going to require 5 days of filming. Good news is he's been replaced by Johnny Flynn, another old friend of Rob's!
