Kristen talks to WWD about Karl Lagerfeld at the Chanel x Charles Finch Pre-Oscar Dinner

Stewart has had a longstanding relationship with Chanel, and had worked with Lagerfeld since she was but 15.

“It’s funny, when something monumental as someone like that passing occurs, people start sending you all these photos — and I obviously remember my relationship with Chanel and when it started, but to see it and sort of walk down that path again was interesting,” she said, fresh from the step and repeat. “I was prepped this evening that ‘they’re going to ask you what was surprising about him that maybe other people wouldn’t know that you did because you got some insight.’ And I was like, ‘He’s so transparent, that’s what’s wild about him.’ He actually really revealed himself and gave himself fully, and that’s why he’s such an impeccable artist. So, yeah, it’s sad, but at the same time you look at that life and you’re like that is what I aspire to in every way.”

Kristen talks to Vanity Fair about Karl Lagerfeld at the Chanel x Charles Finch Pre-Oscar Dinner - 23 February 2019

“I know that fashion comes along with a lot of presupposed rules,” said Stewart, speaking about her own singular style. “And I was always made to feel like you could break all of those rules, and yet still do something individual and unique. Even though [Chanel] seems like the essential, classic luxury brand, the reason they stay that way is because they do subversive shit, and they genuinely believe in it.”

Her praise came at the end of a difficult week for the 109-year-old fashion house. On Tuesday, longtime Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld died at the age of 85 after battling pancreatic cancer; he is survived by his widely publicized and pampered pet cat, Choupette. The fashion world has been mourning the loss of the design icon, celebrating his prolific collaborations with Chanel—as well as Fendi and his own eponymous label. On Friday, designers, princesses, models, and friends gathered in Paris for a cremation ceremony; the following night, Lagerfeld’s West Coast devotees and Oscar nominees gathered in support, solidarity and celebration.

“There are some people that could make it so they live forever,” said Stewart Saturday, her voice trailing off for a moment. The actress collected herself. “I didn't know Karl intimately,” she continued. “I worked with him, and I'm so lucky for that. But through his art and who he was, he will dwell with me in my heart forever, because he was a compulsive and very true artist. I've worked with really great people, but he genuinely was such a leader, such a teacher, such a compassionate, endlessly curious motherfucker, even at that age.”

“He actually revealed himself,” added Stewart. “People definitely got the true version of him. He was witty and kind of tongue-in-cheek, but then also always the most observant person in the room. He was aware—knew everyone's name, and he worked with the people he loved.”

As the plates were cleared, Cyrus, Stewart, Thompson and Woodley took to the garden with McDormand, chatting before breaking out into an impromptu song circle.

Kristen's interview with WWD at the Chanel Haute Couture show

Kristen Stewart was happy to finally get up close to the structure. “I’ve actually never been up the tower, there’s a lot of people over there, you know. It’s pretty crowded,” said the actress, who confessed the perks of her celebrity status include getting to hang out with Karl Lagerfeld. “Being in his library with him, that’s the most fun I’ve had. He probably has about 8,000 books in there and he can tell you where every single one of them is and throughout the day, people have to keep him on track because he’ll be like, ‘Oh wait, I want to show you something.’ We joke around, like, ‘When’s Karl going to get here? Maybe 5 p.m., maybe 10 p.m…. He’s probably studying ancient Flemish right now, he’s probably designing a chair.’

“We did this fragrance campaign and there’s a commercial that goes along with it and I saw him yesterday, he was in the middle of dressing models for the show, and he was like: ‘Have you seen the film?’ And I was, like, ‘Yeah, yeah.’ And he said, ‘Yes, but it’s not your feet.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ (There’s one shot of a close-up of my feet, and they used a double, I don’t know why.) And he was, like: ‘Why would they do that to you?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know but how do you know what my feet look like?’ and he said, ‘Of course I know, those weren’t your feet.’ It’s insane, he sees everything.”

Kristen's interview with WWD for 'Personal Shopper'

Kristen Stewart plays a personal shopper in her latest film, but she’s quick to call out the fashion industry. Stewart attended Ruffino, Air France and UniFrance’s screening of “Personal Shopper” at Metrograph on Thursday, where she shared her thoughts on the fashion world.

In the film, Stewart plays Maureen Cartwright, a personal shopper who has recently lost her brother. “She admires beauty and aesthetic and absolutely loves fashion and is also so in the midst of the grieving process that all of those things that she usually loves and doesn’t feel shame regarding become trivial and ridiculous,” Stewart said of her character.

“There are moments where I’ve felt that, too,” she continued. “It’s, like, ‘God, what does it matter what I’m wearing? There are other things going on in the world.’ I mean, the fashion industry is weird. It’s pretty exclusive and strange. I think it just highlights all of the questions she’s been having about existence.”

Though she may find the industry strange at times, Stewart seems to enjoy it for the most part — and has her role in it as one of Chanel’s faces. She wore a Chanel gown to the screening and offered her thoughts on Karl Lagerfeld’s latest space-themed collection.

“I loved it,” she said of Lagerfeld’s Chanel show. “I wish I was there. Honestly, the photos that would have come out of me looking at that rocket launch would have been, I would have been laughing hysterically but in awe at the same time. It was beautiful.”

“Personal Shopper” reunited Stewart with director Olivier Assayas, whom she holds in high regard. “I haven’t worked with anyone to date comparatively that I’ve wordlessly danced with in this really striking and always unexpected, mysterious way,” Stewart said of Assayas. “I feel an immense amount of trust, but at the same time, we’re never doing anything that we can pinpoint or put our finger on. How do you trust something so ambiguous? I just do. He pushes me and I push him and I feel like we give a lot to each other.”

WWD

Slated to break worldwide on April 3, the ads also features Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne and Caroline de Maigret, each exuding a different allure — insouciant, streetwise and quintessentially Parisian, respectively.

Unveiling the campaign exclusive to WWD, Lagerfeld said he wished to show that the Gabrielle bag can be worn in “many different circumstances” — and why not by a man?

Lagerfeld noted that virtual reality goggles — which inspired the shape of the handbag — are used by both sexes. Indeed, at his fall 2017 ready-to-wear show in Paris earlier this week, the designer had male models — including his eight-year-old godson Hudson Kroenig, tote versions of the Gabrielle. Its double-chain handle permits multiple carrying options, including cross-body for greater security.

Lagerfeld characterized the campaign cast as friends of the house — each very connected to the times.

Stewart is a face of Chanel makeup and Lagerfeld has photographed her for several Chanel handbag and ready-to-wear campaigns. Also a house ambassador, de Maigret has a music label and is a producer, photographer and coauthor of the book “How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style and Bad Habits.”

Stewart, now a regular in front of Lagerfeld’s lens, calls the process “natural and instinctive for both of us.”

“Seeing the satisfaction on Karl’s face when everything comes together is always the highlight for me,” she said. “Exploring the evolution of our creative relationship is one of the greatest privileges I’ve had as an artist. The result always feels as free as the process was.”

The ads are to run exclusively as two double-page spreads — the first with a pack shot and a portrait, and the second with a lifestyle scenario. De Maigret, for example, is depicted barefoot in a Parisian apartment, while Delevingne totes a skateboard against a graffiti-strewn security gate.

All four wear black Chanel jackets and carry different versions of the Gabrielle bag.

In tandem with the print ads are four short films that are to debut on Chanel’s web site and social channels.

The French fashion house has dubbed 2017 the year of Gabrielle, the name of a forthcoming perfume and also jewelry and watch collections inspired by the rebellious house founder.

The Telegraph

‘I’ve gotten to know him,’ Stewart told me. ‘As an outsider I thought, “He’s a character, he’s a fashion designer, he’s probably insanely pretentious.” But the guy ended up being the total opposite of that.’

Their latest collaboration is for Chanel’s new bag, the Gabrielle – the company’s first big bag launch for three seasons. ‘The look of the range is inspired by virtual-reality glasses,’ said Lagerfeld.

Modern though it may be, the bag still boasts the label’s trademark chain, quilting and CC logo. ‘The handbag has a strong look, so the people who represent it have strong looks and personalities,’ he explained.

The images from this shoot – with Lagerfeld as photographer – to publicise the Gabrielle offer a tantalising glimpse of muse and designer at work.

‘Seeing the satisfaction on Karl’s face when everything comes together is always  a highlight for me,’ said Stewart. ‘He’s a visionary.’
